COMPUTER SOFTWARE

A Computer Software is an organized collection of computer data and instructions i.e. source code and libraries collection store, used to perform operations of a computer. Software is created with programming languages and related utilities like script interpreters, compliers, linkers, editors, debuggers etc. It provides information to the computer hardware to perform the functions it implements. Computer software is loaded into the Random Access Memory (RAM).

The external qualities of software are usefulness, performance, correctness, reliability, robustness, usability, and user documentation etc. The internal qualities include correctness, changeability, reusability etc. Computer software is categorized as: System software & Application software.

System software control, integrate and manage all the hardware components of a computer. It consists of an operating system, disk formatters, file managers, display managers, text editors, networking and device controlled software etc. On the other hand, Application software consists of a single program, software packages that work closely together to accomplish a task, and a software suite having common user interface consisting word processor, spreadsheets, databases etc.

Platform software allows the user to interact with the computer and its peripherals. Application softwares are the independent programs from the operating system and perform specific functions like compilers, databases etc. User-written software includes graphics, animation scripts, spreadsheet templates etc.
